In AN OKAPI’S ODE, an okapi recites an ode. But it’s not just any old ode. Far from it. It’s an ode about none other than the athletic competition of all athletic competitions, the one that athletes from all over the world attend for two weeks every fourth summer to contend for medals. What spectator, though, can keep track of all the different sports during those two weeks? Few can. But fear not! Here’s the good news being no run of the mill rhyme-writing ruminant, the okapi, in a poem that’s hard to topi, does all of us a favor by putting all those different sports, from archery and badminton to weightlifting and wrestling, in one whale of a nifty nutshell. It’s quite a feat. But will the okapi’s ode get the gold in the end? Well, you’ll just have to be the judge of that!

Okapis are unusual animals: looking like miniature spindly zebra-horses, they have blue tongues long enough to lick their eyeballs and dine on plants and charcoal (from trees that burned after lightning struck them.) They are truly remarkable creatures native to central Africa and are closely related to giraffes, though much more peculiar looking to my eye. This book taught me that they are also excellent poets and are extremely knowledgeable about the Olympic games.

I bought this book as I have an undergraduate degree in biology and have always found several of the more unusual mammal species in the world (e.g. okapis, pangolins, lemurs, etc.) fascinating, and have read about them intermittently since my collegiate days. When I saw a book of okapi poetry, how could I not purchase it with all due haste? I, of course, could not resist. After reading "An Okapi's Ode" I have noted that the rhyming ruminant has additional books available in this series by R. E. Skibiski (published by Tordwifel Books) on more specific athletic events like badminton and swimming. My appetite for okapi poetry has been sated for the moment, so I am doubtful I will pursue the other volumes, though this would be an entertaining introduction to the Olympics for young readers. The book is a very quick read, but for originality and novelty alone I give this four stars despite my misgivings about the rhyme scheme and meter in the quatrain on synchronized swimming.
